On July 14, by a vote of 306 to 177, the House approved legislation (S. 764) that would override State laws and establish a national standard for labeling of genetically modified foods. The bill now goes to the President, who is expected to sign it. Genetically modified crops are grown from seed and have genes removed to produce particular traits, such as resistance to weed killers, and to boost crop yields. The legislation is intended to avoid a patchwork of mandatory labeling laws, such as the one that recently took effect in Vermont and those pending in other States. It…
