The United States filed an amicus brief in this case because it involves Federal copyright law. Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., was nominated to be solicitor general by President Obama on January 26, 2011, and was sworn in on June 9, 2011. Prior to that, he was deputy counsel to the president. The following is excerpted from the Amicus Curiae Brief for Respondent as submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court on September 7, 2012.   In the Copyright Act of 1976, Congress enacted Section 602(a)(1), which broadened protections against unauthorized importation of copyrighted works to encompass copies that are lawfully made….
