Every year since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution condemning the United States’ economic embargo on Cuba, declaring it a violation of the UN Charter and international law, and every year, the United States has opposed it — until now. On October 26, 2016, the United States, for the first time, abstained from the UN vote altogether, a reflection of President Barack Obama’s position that the time has come to normalize U.S.–Cuban ties.
