Recent Action in Congress on Voter Registration and Verification
Since 2024, Congress has introduced several pieces of legislation regarding proof of U.S. citizenship requirements for federal elections. In the current 119th Congress, the SAVE America Act was first introduced as H.R. 22 by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) on Jan. 3, 2025, and as S. 128 by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) on Jan. 16, 2025. On April 10, 2025, the House passed H.R. 22, by a vote of 220 to 208, but the Senate did not bring it to the floor for consideration. S. 128 did not substantially advance beyond introduction.
