Senator Daschle was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He was a Legislative Assistant to then-U.S. Senator James Abourezk from 1973 to 1975, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1978 to 1986. He was chosen Senate Minority Leader in 1994 and served in that post until becoming Senate Majority Leader in May 2001.
