Congress created the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2004 through passage of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act. The Director of National Intelligence is a Cabinet-level position coordinating all 16 elements of the intelligence community. As Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Gen. Michael V. Hayden, USAF, is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the national intelligence program.
