Key Provisions of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a fixed block grant for State-designed programs of time-limited and work-conditioned aid to families with children. Enacted on August 22, 1996, it repealed Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC), Emergency Assistance for Needy Families, and the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) training program, effective July 1, 1997, at the latest.
