The question of Palestinian statehood has been one of the most divisive issues in the Middle Eastern region — and, indeed, in the world — for nearly 70 years.

In 1947, the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, which recommended the end of British rule over Palestine and partitioning of the area into a Jewish state and a Palestinian Arab state. That Palestinian state has yet to become a reality, however.
