The following is a timeline of major events leading up to the current agreement between the United Nations and Iraq, beginning with the Persian Gulf War. August 2, 1990 — Iraq invades Kuwait and seizes Kuwaiti oil fields. Kuwait’s emir flees. Iraq masses troops along the Saudi border. United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 condemns the invasion and demands Iraq’s withdrawal.
