Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, leading to United Nations Security Council condemnation and sanctions. On January 17, 1991, a UN coalition led by the United States began military operations that ended in Iraq’s withdrawal from Kuwait and acceptance of a ceasefire agreement on March 3. Since April 3, 1991, Iraq has been under UN orders to allow inspectors to search for and dismantle any weapons of mass destruction in the country. Iraq joined the UN on December 21, 1945.
