Foreign Secretary Jack Straw

The United Kingdom joined the European Union in 1973. Along with fellow NATO members the United States and Greece, it is a strong supporter of setting a firm date to begin enlargement negotiations with Turkey. Jack Straw was appointed foreign secretary in 2001. He served as British home secretary from 1997 to 2001.
