The Republic of Kenya has been one of the sub-Saharan African countries hardest hit by AIDS. According to the World Health Organization, there were 2.5 million HIV-positive Kenyans at the end of 2001. That year, 190,000 Kenyans died of the virus. Daniel arap Moi was President of Kenya from 1978 until December 30, 2002, when his party lost power in general elections.
