Germany occupies a temporary seat on the UN Security Council and has been an opponent of the U.S.-led coalition’s invasion of Iraq. Gerhard Schroder was first elected chancellor in 1998. Prior to that, he served as Premier of Lower Saxony from 1990 to 1998. The following is excerpted from Chancellor Schroder’s address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2003.
