Robert G. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1979 and first was elected President in 1987. The following is excerpted from President Mugabe’s address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 26, 2003. Our meeting today is overshadowed by the death of Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello, along with 22 other United Nations workers who were killed in the line of duty in Baghdad on August 19, 2003.
