1858 — After decades of resistance, the Muslim North Caucasus region of Chechnya is conquered by Russia and incorporated into the Russian empire.1917 — The Dagestan region, including Chechnya, declares its independence following the Bolshevik Revolution. 1923 — Bolshevik troops occupy Dagestan and divide the region, creating the Chechen autonomous region. 1934 — The Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic is established.1944 — Soviet leader Josif Stalin deports thousands of Chechens to Siberia and Central Asia, on suspicion of collaborating with Nazi Germany.
