Chronology of Key Events
1914 Cyprus is annexed by Britain after more than 300 years of Ottoman rule. 1925 Cyprus becomes a Crown colony of Britain. 1955 Greek Cypriots begin a guerrilla war against British rule. The National Organization of Cypriot Combatants (EOKA) wants unification with Greece. 1959 Archbishop Makarios, head of the unification campaign, becomes President of Cyprus. 1960 Cyprus gains independence under a constitution providing for broad power-sharing between Turkish and Greek Cypriots. 1963 President Makarios proposes changes to the constitution effectively eliminating power-sharing arrangements with the Turks.
