1914 — Cyprus is annexed by Britain after more than 300 years of Ottoman rule. 1925 — Cyprus becomes a Crown colony of Britain. 1955 — Greek Cypriots begin a guerrilla war against British rule. The National Organization of Cypriot Combatants (EOKA) wants unification with Greece. 1959 — Archbishop Makarios, head of the unification campaign, becomes President of Cyprus. 1960 — Cyprus gains independence under a constitution providing for broad power-sharing between Turkish and Greek Cypriots. 1963 — President Makarios proposes changes to the constitution effectively eliminating power-sharing arrangements with the Turks.
