The Republic of Cyprus was founded in 1960, following 49 years of British colonial rule. Attempts at power-sharing by ethnic Greek and Turkish islanders met with failure, however. After a failed coup and military intervention by Turkish forces in 1974, the northern portion of Cyprus declared its independence from the rest of the island. Cyprus has been a member of the United Nations since September 20, 1960. The nation was admitted, sans the Turkish-controlled areas, into the European Union in May 2004.
