On May 13, 2003, the United States of America joined Argentina and Canada in filing a challenge to the legality of European Community (EC) restrictions on the importation of food derived from agricultural biotechnology before the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body. The United States is home to a great many producers and exporters of genetically modified crops that were being shut out of European markets due to the EC’s unofficial moratorium on the approval process.
