Great Britain is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. John Sawers has served as the United Kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations since August 28, 2007. The following is excerpted from debate during the 5,839th meeting of the UN Security Council on February 18, 2008. The Security Council meets today in unusual circumstances. Anew state has been established in Europeagainst the wishes of its former parent state and against the wishes of apermanent member of the Council.
