Zimbabwe, formerly the British colony of Rhodesia, has a long history of conflict. Forthe last three decades, its fortunes have been tied to those of its president,Robert Mugabe, who wrested control from a whiteminority government in 1980 to become the country’s first black leader.President Mugabe’s Zimbabwe African National Union(ZANU) has been the dominant political party ever since.
