On August 14, President Trump signed into law the National Suicide Prevention Hotline Improvement Act. The new law directs the Federal Communications Commission and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to study the feasibility of de­signing a “simple, easy-to-remember dialing code to be used for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system.” The measure also requires the agencies to examine the effectiveness of the current National Suicide Preven­tion Lifeline and Veterans Crisis Line and recommend improvements and to perform a cost-benefit anallysis of using a three-digit dialing code for this hotline system.
