On Jan. 20, 2025 — the day he was inaugurated to a second term in office — President Donald Trump signed an executive order denying citizenship to a child born on U.S. soil to parents who either entered the U.S. without proper authorization or are only temporarily in the country. Prior to that, anyone born on U.S. soil had been automatically given U.S. citizenship.
