A number of bills have been introduced in recent Congresses to provide a path to U.S. citizenship to for certain children of undocumented immigrants. Most have proposed repealing a provision of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) to enable some unauthorized alien students to become legal permanent residents (LPRs).
