The Department of Labor defines ergonomics as "the science of fitting the job to the work" with the intent of reducing ailments resulting from repetitive motions, forceful exertions, or awkward postures. Such ailments are generally referred to as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and include "conditions that involve the nerves, tendons, muscles, and supporting structures of the body," according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
