Senator Thompson was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994. He was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle Tennessee District from 1969 to 1972, Minority Counsel for the U.S. Senate Watergate Committee from 1973 to 1974, Special Counsel to Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander in 1980, Special Counsel to the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1980 to 1981, and Special Counsel to the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee in 1982.
