Senator Harkin was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1974 to 1984. He is Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. He also serves on the Appropriations Committee, and as chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Subcommittee within that committee, and on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.
