Senator Brownback was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996. From 1982 to 1986, he served as the Ogden and Leonardville, Kansas, City Attorney, and from 1986 to 1993 as the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture. From 1990 to 1991, he was a White House Fellow in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
