The lobbying of public officials is a time-honored tradition in American politics. Groups of individuals or companies with similar interests or concerns often join forces and hire representatives who can provide them with the precious commodities of Washington politics: access and inside information. The most successful lobbyists are those who are familiar with the corridors of power and have personal contacts with decisionmakers.
