Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara
Syria last held a temporary seat on the UN Security Council from 2002 to 2003. It joined the UN on October 24, 1945. Syria requested permission to speak at the Security Council meeting on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
