The NTSB is charged with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in other modes of transportation — railroad, highway, marine, and pipeline. Deborah Hersman was appointed as an NTSB Board Member by President George W. Bush in 2004 and reappointed by President Obama, who appointed her Chair in 2009 and again in 2011.
