In June 2018, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) announced plans to buy about $16,000 worth of human fetal tissue for use in tests that help determine how genes affect a body’s response to medications. By September, that contract — between a company called Advanced Bioscience Resources and the FDA — had been cancelled because of protection and policy concerns related to obtaining the specimens.
