Formed in 1950 with 30 organizations, mostly civil rights and labor groups, the Leadership Conference has grown in numbers, scope, and effectiveness to include more than 200 national coalition members. Vanita Gupta served from 2014 to 2017 as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Prior to that, she was Deputy Legal Director and the Director of the Center for Justice at the American Civil Liberties Union.
