The Republic of Turkey has had military forces in Northern Cyprus since 1960, when it dispatched its troops to protect ethnic-Turkish Cypriots following increased violence on the island after an attempted coup. The Republic of Turkey has been a member of the United Nations since October 24, 1945. Abdullah Gül has served as Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs since March 2003.
