The nonprofit group Mission: Readiness, consisting of 700 retired admirals, generals, and other top military leaders, is highlighting the fact that, based on U.S. De­partment of Defense figures, 71 percent of young adults ages 17 to 24 are ineligible for military service. The three leading preventable causes of ineligibility, according to the group, are: being overweight, lacking education, and having a history of crime or drug use.
