On April 18, 1985, Vernon Madison shot and killed Mobile, Alabama, police officer Julius Schulte. The State of Alabama has been trying to execute Madison for the more than three decades since then. The State charged him with capital murder, but his first two convictions were thrown out on appeal because of misconduct by the prosecution. Although Alabama courts upheld Madison’s third conviction in 1998, further challenges in Federal courts would continue until 2015.
