Senator Byrd was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1958. He served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1946 to 1950, in the West Virginia Senate from 1950 to 1952, and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1952 to 1958. In the Senate, he was Majority Whip from 1971 to 1976, Majority Leader from 1977 to 1980 and from 1987 to 1988, and Minority Leader from 1981 to 1986.
