Veterans’ Suicides
In the final days of April 2019, four veterans committed suicide at Veterans’ Affairs (VA) facilities. The VA estimates that every day, 20 veterans take their own lives. The agency asked for $9.4 billion for 2020 and a House appropriations bill met that number. Also, the bill included $222 million for suicide prevention programs. In September of 2018, the VA released information saying that rates of suicide were highest among veterans aged 18 to 34, and lowest among veterans aged 55 and up.
