On December 7, 2015, then-candidate Donald Trump shocked the political world when he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” Despite widespread criticism, Trump stood by his proposal throughout his winning presidential campaign and, just one week after being inaugurated, issued an order closing the U.S. border to citizens of seven majority-Muslim nations.
