In 1964, when the Advisory Committee of the Surgeon General issued its first report on smoking and health, cigarette smoking was common, fashionable, and occured almost everywhere. The report, which concluded unequivocally that smoking was causally related to lung cancer because of the carcinogens in tobacco smoke, had a profound impact. In 1965, Congress passed the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act, requiring warnings on all cigarette packages. In 1975, all broadcast advertising of cigarettes was banned.
