Current EU Approach

All member states of the European Union (EU) are affected by the flow of international migration. They have agreed to develop a common immigration policy at the EU level. The European Commission has made proposals for developing this policy, adopting a two-track approach: establishing a common legal framework concerning the conditions of admission and stay of third-country nationals on the one hand, and an open coordination procedure to encourage the gradual convergence of policies not covered by European legislation on the other.
