Demographic Changes in the Euro Zone and Acceding Countries
According to the first demographic estimates for 2003, the European Union (EU) had a population of 380.8 million on January 1, 2004. The population of the Euro Zone (Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Sweden, and United Kingdom) is estimated at 306.9 million, and that of the 10 Acceding Countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia) at 74.1 million. In the EU, the population grew by 3.4 per 1,000 inhabitants in 2003, due to natural population growth and net migration of +0.8 percent and +2.6 percent, respectively….
