Canon 7C(1) of the Florida Code of Judicial Conduct says, in part, that candidates for competitive judicial offices in the State cannot “personally solicit campaign funds.” They can only finance their elections by establishing committees that operate independently of the candidate. The code of conduct is enforced by the Florida Bar, the association that governs the legal profession in the State. In 2009, the State bar filed a complaint against Lanell Williams-Yulee, a candidate for a county court judgeship, alleging multiple violations of judicial ethics, including issuing a signed solicitation for campaign donations in violation of Canon 7C(1).
