On September 21, the Pentagon announced that nearly two years after President Obama ordered 33,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan in an effort to stop escalating Taliban violence, the last of those surge troops have left the country. The withdrawal, which leaves 68,000 American forces in the war zone, comes during a wave of attacks in which Afghan Army and police troops, or insurgents dressed in their uniforms, have attacked U.S. and NATO forces.
