David Calahan was born and raised in Oregon, a son of a timber faller. His first job was working in the woods as a choker setter. He has lived for 30 years in the wildland interface of southern Oregon in the Applegate Valley on 80 acres bordered on three sides by 6,300 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land. He retired from the Medford Fire Department in November 1999.
