Milestone Events - 1924 to the Present
1924 — The Society for Human Rights in Chicago becomes the country’s earliest known gay rights organization. The movement exists for a few months before being ended by the police. 1926 — The New York Times becomes the first major publication to use the word “homosexuality.” 1945 — U.S. Secretary of war Harry Stimson orders a review of discharges of homosexuals during World War II, with the aim of “reinducting” men who hadn’t committed any in-service homosexual acts. 1948 — Alfred Kinsey publishes Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, revealing to the public that homosexuality is far more widespread than…
