The U.S. Department of Defense is the Federal department charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. Robert Gates was sworn in as Secretary of Defense in December 2006. He served as president of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006 and as interim dean of the George Bush School of Government at Texas A&M from 1991 to 2001.
