Slobodan Milosevic

Slobodan Milosevic became head of the Serbian Communist Party in 1987 and president of Serbia in 1989. During the Yugoslavian civil war that followed the secession of Croatia and Slovenia in 1991 and Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992, Milosevic backed Serbian rebels in these separatist regions. In 1995, he took part in a peace treaty that partitioned Bosnia. In 1997, Milosevic became president of the new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro.
