The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), informally known as Obamacare, was signed into law in 2010. Passed strictly along party lines, the act overhauled the U.S. health care system to expand insurance coverage and improve affordability. Under the ACA, federally subsidized premium tax credits (PTCs) help eligible households lower their premium payments for qualified health plans offered through federal- and state-run virtual marketplaces, or exchanges.
