Burma Sanctions and Haiti Reconstruction
Burma Sanctions United States sanctions on Burma began in 1988 in response to what the U.S. Government deemed to be a general disregard by the country’s ruling military junta for the human rights and civil liberties of the Burmese people. The sanctions have included visa bans, restrictions on financial services, import prohibitions on Burmese goods, a ban on new investments in the country, and constraints on U.S. assistance. Reforms undertaken by the new quasi-civilian government, led by President Thein Sein, who came to power in 2011, have led the Obama Administration to gradually ease U.S. sanctions.
