Throughout the Nation’s history, immigration has been a source of economic and social vitality and opportunity, with large-scale influxes of immigrants occurring during several peak periods. The latest of these began in the 1970s and continues today. Yet, because of the politics involved, immigration policies have rarely kept up with these demographic shifts.
